Due to popular demand, Gary Wells will be our next demonstrator, once again. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at Ithaca College, Ithaca, New York. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he is a graduate of the Cooper School of Art and Baldwin-Wallace College. He received a PhD in the History of Art from the Ohio State University. At Ithaca College, he has served as Director of the Handwerker Gallery and as Chair of the Department of Art History. He teaches courses in Modern European Art and Visual Culture, as well as art historical theory. His research interests include the relationship of art and science in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the role of technology in the study of visual images, the context of Modern Art in the city of Paris, and the iconography of late nineteenth century French art. He has published in such journals as American Ceramics, Culture and Cosmos, and Academic Commons. He currently lives in Owego, New York. His profile and recent teaching may be found on the academic profile webpage at www.ithaca.edu/hs/depts/arthistory/facstaff/wells/.
This meeting will be, as our meetings generally are, open to guests, as well as to members. (Guests may be charged an admission fee of $2.00 each. Because we don't know in advance how many people will attend and participate, we ask that each person attending bring one or two original artworks for critiquing. However, should there be too many items to be critiqued, we may be able only to address each participant's first choice item. We'll do what is reasonably possible. Artworks addressed will be commented on regarding their characteristics and, especially, their virtues as successful art; no scorings or rankings will be made. The artworks submitted may be in any of the following categories:---paintings (oil, acrylic, or watercolor)---pastels---drawings, charcoal---photographs (color or monochrome, and darkroom or digital) and sculpture. Please participate. It's your meeting.
Join us at the Vestal Public Library - demonstration starts @ 7:30.

The 7th annual "Young at Art" Art Show and Competition open to all area school students grades 9 through 12 is on display at Fine Arts Society of the Southern Tier Gallery located next to Macy’s in the Oakdale Mall. Each student is able to submit up to two pieces of art per category. All art medias are accepted. We have received ninety-two entrees from nine area school districts.
As a society, we strive to provide a venue to educate in the field of art and also nurture talent and encourage creative vision and growth. Our goal with the “Young at Art” Show and Competition is to give our artistic youth the opportunity to have the gallery experience and showcase their creative talents - and win awards. This is all made possible with sponsors providing additional prizes. This year's sponsors for prizes include The Oakdale Mall, CommercialArtSupply.com, Mpix.com, Sculpt.com, and the Artisan's Townhouse in Owego NY. On March 12, there will be an Awards Ceremony and Reception open to the general public, at the FASST Gallery in the Oakdale Mall. Prizes to be awarded total approximately $800.00 in value. Snacks and drinks will be provided by local sponsors such as Moe’s Southwest Grill, Marilyn’s Bakery, Oakdale Pizza, Weis Markets and FASST members. Student art work will be on display until March 24, 2010. If you have the opportunity, please stop by to show your support.
